Trayvon Martin and Davontae Sanford – A tale of two evils.

Trayvon Martin and Davontae Sanford - A tale of two evils. While Detroiters' response to the Travyon Martin verdict was understandably strong, an even greater evil where a young 14 year old kid was induced by a corrupt prosecutor to plead guilty to crimes he did not commit and then sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 35-50 years happened right here in DETROIT for which you should all be equally outraged. You have heard the news, heard the facts and know the case very well. I do not need to recount it all on this post. They key fact in his case, however, is that Vincent Smothers, the professed hitman for Detroit Police, later confessed to murdering four people on Runyon Street for which Mr. Sanford, a mentally disabled kid was wrongfully convicted. Why are so many Detroiters silent in the face of that injustice?

If your silence is because you are fed up with crime, the greater crime on your hands is your apparent willingness to let a 14 year old rot in prison despite his innocence. If your silence is because you are fed up with crime, the greater crime is knowing that the victims on Runyon Street did not get justice by sending an innocent 14 year old mentally disabled kid to prison for those crimes. Your silence is betrayal and will become karma.

Mr. Sanford lost his life, just like Trayvon Martin - a life where he should have been allowed to graduate from school, go to college and enjoy all the things every other innocent teenager his age has enjoyed.

While Detroiters lifted their voices and raised their fists for Travyon Martin, a child of our own was also stolen from us by a system filled with caprice and malice. The least thing to do is call the Wayne County Prosecutor up and ask her to do what is morally right and set him free. I know I will.

The Michigan Court of Appeals has scheduled oral argument in the Davontae Sanford case for Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Cadillac Place Building on West Grand Boulevard. This is the case where 14 year old Davontae Sanford was induced to plead guilty to four murders for which professed hitman for Detroit Police Vincent Smothers later confessed. Kym Worthy refuses to set Davontae's conviction aside given the newly-discovered evidence of Smothers' admitted role in the murders - a tremendous injustice. After oral argument we will make a statement urging prosecutor Kym Worthy to do her job and confess error and set that kid free. While initially we intended to confront the prosecutor outside the appeals court to shout him down, we have opted for a more civil demonstration so as not to jeopardize Davontae's chances on appeal, which I believe are very good. But shame on the prosecutor for sucking up the blood of an innocent kid!

wrongful conviction case of Davontae Sanford for August 6 in Detroit

Important breaking legal news: The Michigan Court of Appeals just scheduled oral argument on the wrongful conviction case of Davontae Sanford for August 6 in Detroit. We will be there to support Davontae and demand his immediate release and to tell the world of the shameful misdeeds of the Wayne County Prosecutor! And personally for me; what better time for the case to be up for oral argument than this holy month of Ramadan to give the ultimate sacrifice of my own freedom in this important jihad for JUSTICE so that Davontae can be free again. To those of you who are content to ignore the monstrosity of this case I can only say your silence is betrayal.

About Snitch: Dwayne Johnson stars as John Matthews, a businessman hit hard when his teenage son is wrongfully ensnared in a drug bust and threatened with a terrifying 10-30 years in federal prison (under the US government's draconian minimum drug sentencing laws). The only option to reduce the sentence is to "snitch." A desperate Matthews makes a deal with the politically ambitious federal prosecutor (Sarandon) and infiltrates the operation of a violent drug dealer (Williams). When his amateur undercover work unexpectedly exposes a major player in the Mexican drug trade (Bratt), the rules suddenly change and an already dangerous venture turns decidedly deadly.

How Long Will It Take To Eliminate Prison Rape?

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was enacted one decade ago this week, but American children are still being sexually assaulted in adult jails and prisons.

How long will it take to end violence behind bars?

In the last ten years, we have witnessed the invention of the iPhone, the invention of the first cancer vaccine, and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, but we still have not implemented a law to protect people in custody from rape.

The good news is we can Take Action Now. The PREA regulations issued last year include the Youthful Inmate Standard, which is aimed to protect youth – the population most at risk – from assault behind bars. In April of this year, Congressmen Frank Wolf and Bobby Scott urged the U.S. Attorney General to issue clear guidance to states and localities on the regulation’s Youthful Inmate Standard. Now is the time for you to join them.

Here are four things you can do:

  1. If you are a national organization, please sign on to the national letter urging the Attorney General to issue guidance to states by contacting Mackenzie at Mtudor@cfyj.org by August 5.
  2. If you are a state organization or individual, please call or write your Governor  telling him or her that you demand he or she implement the Prison Rape Elimination Act in its entirety.
  3. If you are an individual, sign the petition urging your Governor to implement the Prison Rape Elimination Act in its entirety.
  4. On Thursday, to mark the passage of the bill in the Senate, share these sample messages over Facebook and Twitter.
